Northern lights effect
Old 2008-03-20

Hey, first off let me sar this is my first post. I'm a graphic designer not a developer (fairly limited knowledge of actionscript) but I've done a few projects in Flash and I find some great inspiration here at Ultrashock.

I've just launched a site for a client - www.stevencbrowning.com - nothing fancy but it's not supposed to be, the intent was clean and simple with just enough Flash to give it some 'flair'... I think 15 pieces is the minimum...

The one thing I haven't figured out how to implement (per client request) is an aurora borealis effect in the sky that changes color to match the color scheme, i.e. full color on the home page and then changes to monotone according the the overall color scheme for each page.

I've experimented with a few different approaches (I want a soft effect, not necessarily realistic but no choppy, hard edges either) but I either end up with an effect that looks cheesy or else one that is too memory intensive and chokes up on most browsers. I know using gradients/alpha has a lot to do with this, but I haven't been able to find the happy medium without using one or both. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks in advance,

Kameron

One thing I did a few years ago was take the main image and make 2 copies of it with different color effects.

Then I added them on layers above the main image. I then just tweened the transparency of the 2 images and it gave a pretty cool color changing effect.

It's fun to play around with.

NW - Why didn't I think of that? Much simpler than trying to write a complex actionscript.
Thanks for the tip!
