Major Flash Player Performance boost coming soon!
Old 2003-07-15 Last edited by SirG : 2003-07-15 at 06:43.

For those who didn't make it to Flash Forward or missed the Macromedia keynote, you really missed out on some exciting numbers that Norm Meyrowitz presented.

The new Flash player promises an extreme performance boost for PC but especially for Mac users. Have a look at these numbers:

:: Component Initialization Performance
Windows
Flash 6: 41 ms
Flash x: 7 ms

Mac
Flash 6: 74 ms
Flash x: 34 ms

:: Filling Array Performance
Windows
Flash 6: 1929 ms
Flash x: 511 ms

Mac
Flash 6: 4674 ms
Flash x: 1000 ms

:: Populate Data Grid Performance
Windows
Flash 6: 1353 ms
Flash x: 357 ms

Mac
Flash 6: 3002 ms
Flash x: 854 ms

:: Sort Data Grid Performance
Windows
Flash 6: 4098 ms
Flash x: 678 ms

Mac
Flash 6: 10083 ms
Flash x: 871 ms

I took a picture of the slide Norm showed but I guess I was so excited that I moved while taking the pic, so excuse me for the blurry image

Macromedia didn't give any indication on when the player will be released though... But I think it's something to look forward to...

I really want to answer that question but it was not specified in the keynote...

All sounds very impressive, but what does it all mean? Can someone please explain what Data Grid Performance is? Does that basically mean ActionScript heavy movies will execute faster? Me hoping so...

I'm sorry to say that Macromedia didn't give any more info during the FFwd keynote so all these questions will remain unanswered untill they do release some more info.

Mike Chambers has a little FF2003 NYC wrap-up on his blog, and some unsharp pictures (tripods aren't that expensive and do some magic! )
