Linear Mode
I started php back in early 2008 and now I'm on to more advanced things with php.
I think the best way to learn is to sit down and create a full site (maybe your own portfolio) implementing as many "features" as you can. I find for me at least, the best way to learn is just to dive right into it and start experimenting with syntax.
