[talk] - Actionscrpt competition ideas !
Old 2009-07-08

hello everyone

well .. i was thinking .. if ultrashock or any other website needs to make a competition in actionscript .. what ideas could be held in such competition .

maybe lots of you have heard about the 25 line competition

so .. i am asking you to post any ideas that came up to your mind .. don't limit it with your abilities in actionscript .. just through the idea even if it looks crazy and funny .. actually it might be better if it is crazy or funny

i'll post my ideas as well .. please try to post something .. thanx

cool, I would be down with a Ultrashock competition. 25 lines is pretty limiting I say 100 lines.... ?

Creating a SWF that is below a certain number of KB would be a better idea, maybe 5KB, and no external file loading etc (i.e. the SWF has to be self-contained).

I've been waiting for an Ultrashock AS competition for ages but these things never seem to take off, even the Photoshop battles have died out because no one can be bothered to participate.

I'am in. Anyone who reads this and is worried about your skill level. This is just something to be fun and entertaining

I like Nutrox's idea of keeping everything self contained (i.e. no loading files). I have really been looking into Flash's drawing API. It would be cool to see what people can draw out with code

If there is no approach from Ultrashock to the community, maybe the community may consider trying another place to share ideas and discuss. Very seriously.

So... 5KB probably isn't a good idea seeing as an empty SWF is 4KB.

How about this, we can create whatever we want as long as (a) the SWF is no more than 64KB in size, (b) the SWF is self-contained (uses no external resources), (c) there must be an element of user interaction even if it is something as simple as reacting to the mouse position. Any ActionScript version can be used but the SWF must be published for Flash Player 9 or higher.

How does that sound?

I need a break from my usual work and this competition sounds like a lot of fun, so if we can all agree on the rules etc then I would be happy to sort everything out and get the ball the rolling. I will have a chat with miko and nrg to see if a prize of some kind can be sorted out (and make this competition a bit more official).

Sounds like a swell plan Nutrox!

well .. 5k is too tight ... 64k is too loosey .. i can see people doing a full game in 64 KB !! .. but hey .. that might be it !!

ok .. nutrox idea might be practical and actually implementable !

what about other ideas like ..

what if every competitor builds his own roboBug or something .. and these robobugs compete against each other in something .. like collecting food (dots) that appear randomly on screen .. and who ever collects more food wins .. not sure how would this be implemented actually !! .. but i have always liked the idea of building robots and let them fight each other ..

That is a nice idea but it would turn this from a fun competition into a big development project.

nrg likes the idea of a 64KB competition and awarding Ultrashock credits to the winner, just waiting to hear back from miko then we will be able to work on the finer details.

I think Nutrox is right in the competition turning into a big development. We need to be able to include all levels of skills and designers who might not be as versed in Actionscript. I know we cannot accomodate everyone but the more the merrier. Maybe we can take a tally of how many people will compete and if the mas majority is developers. We can then take things up a notch.

This is where I am after having another think about the competition, and I feel Flashawy was correct about the 64KB file size so I have dropped that to 32KB.

Anyway, let me know what you guys think. FYI: I will be entering the competition but will abstain from winning a prize.

Competition Rules
  • You can create any kind of SWF content as long as it is interactive (could be something as simple as reacting to the mouse position).
  • You can use any ActionScript version but must publish the SWF for Flash Player 9 or lower.
  • The SWF dimensions must be 500w 500h or less (no full-screen mode).
  • The SWF file size must be 32KB (32768 bytes) or less.
  • The SWF must be self-contained, it cannot access any external files or use local connections etc.
  • You can submit as many SWF files as you want for the competition but you will only be eligible for a single prize.

Competition Prizes
  • First place - Winner receives 50 Ultrashock credits.
  • Second place - Winner receives 25 Ultrashock credits.
  • Third place - Winner receives an Ultrashock Asset (with a value of no more than 20 credits) of their choice.

It would be cool if we could use flash 10 and the Z axis stuff.

You will need to be more creative with FP9 - that is the main reason for choosing it.

Nope. Once the finer details have been worked out and approved I will create an official competition thread unless miko/nrg fancy creating a special page for it.

we have to find a way to get more people into the competition .. using any version of AS is a good thing as mentioned in the rules ... any more ideas to get more people involved would be great

Amazing isn't it, only six Ultrashock members replied to this thread. I won't say what I'm thinking, let's just say I'm in a very negative mood at the moment.

im telling you man, ever since they changed the site all around it has been like extra vacant here lol, im definitely down for a competition though.. i think if we post up a couple of banners around the web people will show up, Ultrashock is like a "name brand" as far as actionscript communities are the topic .. i think if people just saw the strings;
"actioncript" and "competition" together they will at least come to check it out. im personally not really interested in the credits though , bragging rights are what i would be after hehe. but it should definitely be voted on via poll by the users, it would encourage people to tell others about it & have them register.

Maybe a proper ActionScript competition could be launched as part of the promotion for USv3?

That might work well.

im sure it wouldnt be huge the first time around, so there would have to be a few.. but im thinking along the lines of .. hmm like an avatar type link that says "hey check out my UltraShock contest entry and Vote for me , or, someone else just vote" lol , ill try to dream something up to better illustrate but im sure most see my 2cents.

Going off-topic slightly, I think regular (monthly?) official Ultrashock competitions would be good for US3, as long as they were one of the main focus points of the site. There could a range of different competition types such as Photoshop, ActionScript, Sound, and so on, and they could be sponsored to help with the financial side of things.

Back on-topic, I think 32KB should be dropped to 16KB for extra creative fun.

Awesome, lets do this! I can help spread some banners and the word. I think we just need the "official" rules, deadlines and stuff.
