Different countries.. different situations.. different budgets.. not everyone is able to upgrade their systems as quickly as others are able to

You should know that if you're a website developer

Well, I assumed everyone on here is a developer. I understand the general population might not be running on the latest PC power but I thought developers would be.

imaginer - lol - but really I actually run a 400MMX machine and can run AE, PS, ILL, Flash and Dreamweaver at the same time on it. It's a dinosaur but I haven't gotten around to buying a new computer in 6 years.

My Mac is a huge upgrade but ends up slower than my PC sometimes. its 1st gen G5 1.6

I think I'm tied for the slowest machine on the post.

AMD Athlon XP 2800+, (Operating at 2.1 GHz)
Tried 2.5 Ghz but couldn't boot

-1024MB DDR400 RAM (Operating at 333Mhz Minimum)
-Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB (Had a MX440 in it for a while, you'll be suprised of how much it could take!)
-80GB HDD (I need to get some extra drives this one is pretty much filled)

And my new Antec Performance TX1050B SOHO FileServer Case with a nice SmartPower 2.0 500 Watt PSU (Lets see how many new HDDs I can plug onto that )

In case ur wondering of what my old MX440 could do:
Half Life 2 at 1024x768, setting maxed except for Antialiasing (never tried it but it could take on X2 with ease)

lol. This is an old thread. I'm sure most have upgraded since but here are specs:

PC1: AMD 2800+
PC2: AMD 1700+

However, neither of these support SSE2 which is needed for video editing so I'll be upgrading soon.

Guess this thread is really old. Thats my old desktop.

My new laptop:

Dell Inspiron 6400
Intel Centrino Duo, 1.83 GHz
1.50 GB or RAM

Just upgraded from a gig of ram, its DANG fast! Starts up windows in 5 seconds, I kid you not.

I might upgrade to 2 gigs soon.

I build my desktops with AMD 64 4k+, or now, the AMD dual cores. SLI graphics rig in my main beast. Decent ram (typically 2-4 gig).

Hilariously fast, best thing I ever did was switch to AMD on my desktops.

SLI is expensive though; 2 nVidia 7950 GT+ cards (the cards were brand new at the time) was something like 6-700 bucks (for which you can build a whole acceptable dev box).

I sort of wish I needed another machine; I want to upgrade my main beasty to the latest AMD, but there's totally no need, the machine only really starts taking a beating if I run after effects photoshop AND cubase/riffworks etc. Oblivion/EQ2/Vanguard, highest settings generally (or close).

If you're a dev, can't skimp on your main build (or your laptop, but a high end one can be very expensive), but if you build it yourself, a monster for around 1700 (including a 21" widescreen monitor and a little 5.1 sound set) isn't a problem.
