How do I create a corner with a drop shadow?
Old 2008-11-18

If you go to this website http://hawaiirealtyinternational.com/ you'll notice that the main page design has a drop shadow, then at the bottom this goes up to the corner.

I am trying to create a similar effect, the problem is that my drop shadow doesnt work becuse it sort of rounds off at the corner - there isn't really a corner, it's more of a rounded edge. The way i did it in PS was just to create a new layer under the entire layout shape and then fill it black, then use the guassin blur filter to make an even drop shadow. I tried applying a drop shadow from the layer effects button, but this didn't work either.

Here is what mine looks like:

I think the key graphic on their site is this...

But I don't know how to make a corner, as opposed to a rounded edge when I make a drop shadow, any ideas?

Maybe try using an Outer Glow to get that effect instead of Drop Shadow.

1. Draw the square
2. Duplicate layer. This will create something like "Layer 1 copy". Move this layer below "Layer 1". Rename "Layer 1 copy" to "blur layer".
3. Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur (set this to around 100 to 200 px with 90 degrees for the angle)
4. Change "blur layer"'s opacity to 50%.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4.
6. Trim off the top and left edges using the Rectangular Marquee Tool on both blur layers.
7. Send $10 to me via Paypal.

Just kidding on the last step.

Hope that helps.

That works even worse lol... here's what I got following those instructions just now.

Someone gave me a method that worked on another forum about a week ago anyway, but thanks.

HAHAHAHA my bad. I need more sleep.

I thought you wanted it to look like the one in the first photo. But then I realized that that one is your attempt which failed.

1. Draw the square
2. Duplicate layer. This will create something like "Layer 1 copy". Move this layer below "Layer 1". Rename "Layer 1 copy" to "blur layer".
3. Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur
4. Change "blur layer"'s opacity to 50%.

That should work. To make it more "round" you could do more of a Gaussian blur, then you would just resize that layer using Edit -> Transform -> Scale. What you want to do is make it smaller so just the fringes of the blurred layer is showing. Adjust opacity as needed.

If you want it even more round and defined, you could create a rounded box with the Rounded Rectangular Tool the same dimensions are your original box instead of duplicating the layer.

Well the first part is correct. It should give him the corners he wants. If you want the corners more well-defined, reduce your Gaussian blur amount and adjust the opacity. To adjust the spread, use a small amount of Motion Blur in each direction (0 and 90 degrees) alternating in amounts.
