Google Web Toolkit
Old 2007-07-30

The whole iPhone/Flash debacle has accelerated my interest in JavaScript technologies. I'm still a hardcore Flash guy, but, I have had to concede that in the end, JavaScript/Ajax has come far enough that you can build a solid web app out of it that runs in pretty much anything. Bottom line, I can't continue to turn my nose up at Ajax.

But start, or rather return to, coding JavaScript and HTML in text editors (or even dreamweaver)? No debugging, poor coding environment, endless browser issues? No way. I want to use either C# or Java in an industrial framework.

Enter the Google Web Toolkit. I spent the whole weekend with it pretty much. I gotta say, it's awesome. The download has utilities to actually create an eclipse project, and once you "get it", using java to code an Ajax/JavaScript site is pretty damn easy. Even the basic RPC (basic being good enough for most projects) seems solid.

It was surprisingly strong enough that I went out and bought a GWT book. In one weekend I essentially incorporated Ajax into my arsenal with the Java language. Microsoft has a similar offering, I just went with the java one for the platform ubiquity and eclipse integration.

Anybody else work with the GWT?
ActionScript is a [ "funny" ] thing.

Still nobody messed with this thing? The recent security bombs reported on Ajax (hackers are evidently finding Ajax VERY easy to hack, because as usual fanatical developers are overusing it, incorporating db and business logic into the client side code and whatnot), but as an evolving technology with tools like the GWT it's definitely worth at least a casual working familiarity.

Hey Tcoz, I'm an AJAX newbie but I'm trying to work with it with a guy in the office who knows it.
Yep man, Java and AJAX are the future of the web for cellphones and PDA's, shame that we cannot develop good stuff for mobile devices with flash.
I'm gonna start using the GWT, by now I'm coding by hand.
I let you know how it works.

Cheers
