Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 (Developer Preview)
Old 2008-03-06

Microsoft just released the first Internet Explorer 8 public beta.

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 is a developer preview for web designers and developers to help prepare their websites for the launch of Internet Explorer 8. Some of the new features designed for developers include a developer toolbar and improved interoperability and compatibility.

Internet Explorer 8 is designed to work in standard mode out of this box. However, Microsoft provides a way for users to browse the web in a way similar to Internet Explorer 7 by using the emulate Internet Explorer 7 button on the chrome.

Cascading style sheets 2.1 compliance

The Internet Explorer 8 layout engine is built to be cascading style sheets 2.1 compliant, enabling web developers and designers to write their pages once and have them render properly across all cascading style sheets 2.1 compatible browsers. However, Microsoft is not finished—hence, Microsoft is seeking feedback from developers working with Internet Explorer 8 Developer Beta 1.
I just hope that they can deliver that engine this time!

it´s looking pretty good for a beta, minor issues like css icons not working anymore, but the browser itself looks like a nice step up from ie7.

I cannot wait for the day when all browsers render everything the same and no more using hacks and what not to get things working right. But maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part.

Indeed, it's only going to get worse I'm afraid with every new browser released...

well ie8 is neat, but the css icon trick doesnt work on any site making use of it, so it´s not just this site.
Works just fine of course when emulating ie7, a well, minor bugs like that and some other minor issues is just to be expected by a beta.

Hello, I wonder if... the 8 beta removes the IE 7 or is it possible to run both browsers.
thanx

Hi webeginner, IE8 beta includes an 'Emulate IE7' mode so you can effectively run both versions just not at the same time.

I don't think so. I believe that things have improved a lot the last few years. Now a days things look pretty much identical in the Gecko, Webkit and Opera rendering engines and it only gets better for every release. It's still just Internet Exploder that messes things up and hopefully IE8 will solve all the headaches (or most of them at least). But still IE6 has a quite large share so it will take a while until we can lose that one an IE7 also sucks big time although not as much as IE6

The problem with browsers is that new versions aren't adopted that easely by 'regular users' so developers are stuck with the ancient browsers if they want to target a broad audience. Microsoft still doesn't force people enough to use a more recent version of their browser. The same goes for OS'es.

Looking at our own Ultrashock stats: from all the IE users, still 35% use 6.x, while 98% of all our visitors have Flash player 9.x installed. I even see Win 95, ME & 98 users in our recent stats, but they do have Flash player 9!
