[internet] Amazon launches search engine
Old 2004-04-15

Amazon launched a beta version of it's upcoming search engine a9.com.

The new search engine sports some new (some innovating) features:

Search Inside the Book™: In addition to web search results they present book results from Amazon.com that include Search Inside the Book. When you see an excerpt on any of the book results, click on the page number to see the actual page from that book. (You will need to be registered at Amazon.com.)

URL Short Cuts: At A9.com you can search directly from the browser URL box by typing: A9.com/ultrashock

Search History: All your searches at A9.com are stored on their servers and shown to you at any time from any computer you use. Clicking on a link performs the search again. You can hide the window at any time and a password will be required to open it again. You can edit your history, for example, to hide an entry.

Click History: If any of the web search results include a site that you have seen before, it's marked on the result, including the last time you visited that site.

Most of these features require that you register though. What else did you expect?

I don't like the fact that you have to register to use most of the features....

Interesting though.

My news was used...

That's a good thing, right?

Kinda weird ultrashock.com doesn't come up in the top 10 when you use the URL thingy.. And I don't think they're trying to beat anyone with with the register demand.

Well Google got to where they are today by not making users register, exactly what a9 is trying to do.

Google lives on....... for now.

Honestly, I think y'all are way off base here. I'm going to take a wild stab and be so bold as to say that Amazon leased Google's searching API for themselves. Why do I say this? Simple, go to google, do a search for a topic (example: http://a9.com/web-rat.com) and now, go to google to do the same and you'll find the same results.

Let's not get too carried away and realize that sometimes you can skin and repackage code up and sell it for millions. Just because it doesn't look like google, has a different name than google doesn't mean that it isn't google.

Remember that Google and Amazon are partners.

I'm willing to bet that within 5 years, one of these two companies will be buying each other out. My money is on Google buying Amazon.

Anyone else?

Actually, I confess.. I'm wrong. After doing a search on a9.com, I looked at the bottom and ... you see:

Results also provided by A9.com, Alexa, and Amazon.com.

Alexa is a search engine. Go to Alexa.com and you'll see in the footer: "an amazon.com company"

Interesting... does this mean that Google and Amazon will be competing now?

lol! WebRat.

Well..Who needs another search engine anyways?!?!? I am satisfied with Google and alltheweb.com. It seems everyone wants to make a search engine now and beat google..and..google's trying to be everyone else with the Gmail and even a dating site I saw a while ago. It's a wild Rat race..sorry webrat didn't mean u :P

Cheers!

http://a9.com/-/company/whatsCool.jsp

it says on this page "Web Search: Web search results are provided by Google".

I think that a9.com is google with a skin.

----------
it's only a matter of time before microsoft buys them all anyways.

It's basically Google with personalized features. But hmm.. the results aren't exactly the same.

Anything to get a list of people's personal information.

Amazon and Google are indeed partners..

A9 is a search tool which enhances Google search results by adding results from Amazon's Search Inside The Book program, site information from Alexa, and search and site history information they've collected.

Yeah.. I found some articles tonight about a9 and that it's using google results.

Makes me wonder why the hell they bother to own alexa if they're going to be using google? I wonder if google powers alexa.

A repackaging of Alexa?
What is interesting is that the "site info" shows Alexa data...I hope that they are not handling the rankings based on the data collected via the Alexa toolbar... Then if you go to Alexa their search is powered by Google. Weird.

i like google but i think its getting too big and powerful for its boots now!! Just a year or 2 ago Yahoo was the biggest now no one can touch Google and they are trying to corner the market with Gmail etc before MSN, AOL & Yahoo come back with their attacks... perhaps it will be too late and everyone will have to use Google.... who knows??!!??
