problems printing dynaimc text
Old 2005-08-11

hi,
i've been trying to figure out how to print my dynamic text in flash for quite some time now and have come up just a little short. here's what's happening.

i have a presentation that is being ran on a computer, not the web, and it makes use of dynamic text. the presnetation also makes use of multiple levels. all frames that i'd like to print have the #p as the frame label. when trying to print from the projector with all the swfs that are loading i had mad problems that i didn't even try to figure out. the preview window from print on my mac g5 didn't even show any of the conent so i gave up doing it that way. i did find out that if i click just one of the swfs that are loading into the different levels of the flash pres that i get better results. when i hit preview from the print menu i see all my pages with the #p and even the dynaimc text is there. however. in the preview window, any dynaimc text box i have displays the text that is on the frame that i was on when i go to print. is there a way to use a simple code so that it will allow me to print all my frames with the correct dynamic text for that frame? i've tried a lot of the print functions, printAsBitmap, printNum, etc. and nothing seems to work. please HELP!!! my only alternative is to take screen shots of every slide and link to a powerpoint that has the screen shots on a separate page. not the best way because when something changes in the dynamic text the screen shot image will have to be updated and now that i'm getting revisions it looks like i'll have to make all brand new screen shots which is very bad since there are over 300 of them. mucho thanks for any insights!

Doesn't look like a lot of people are printing from their apps. I'm having a similar problem. Seems like printing is one of the least documented tasks in flash.

the problem i was having was some time ago. i think i was using flash 7 so i'm sure printing has been made easier with the newer versions. i haven't had the need to print with a newer version yet so i don't know for sure what the code is or how to do it.

the way i wound up doing it in flash 7 was having separate files for printing. so you would click on the print swf, the print swf would cycle through each slide in the presentation so each dynamic text field would load in that section. then it was as simple as going to the file menu and selecting print. then you could specify which slides/pages you wanted to print.

what i couldn't figure out was why the dynamic text fields weren't printing. everything else on the pages were printing but not the dynamic text. only the first slide of dynamic text would print. and that was because the text on that slide had been loaded. if i went through every slide so the text was loading on each slide it would have printed. but that was a little time consuming and kind of a pain to tell the client that a user would have to cycle through each slide manually to get them to print. so that is why i had the slides cycle automatically, so each slide would load the text.

all this was done in the same level so i had to put anything that was in a different level all into level 0. i did it this way cuz i was having a lot of trouble getting all levels to print. there might have been an easier or different way of doing this but this was what worked for me.

i should also say that i am not a programmer so a lot of what i found on the net in forums etc. was a little over my head. it's probably a lot easier to do this now.
good luck!
