AS3 and SQL - direct link?
Old 2007-09-06

Is it possible to access a SQL database directly from Flash (AS3) without the need for web-services?

nope, it's not possible, you need a server side language as translator.

I wouldn't say it's not possible - I know for a fact you can do it with mySQL (http://maclema.com/assql/) , so if by SQL you mean mySQL there's your solution. If by SQL you mean Microsoft SQL, I don't think anyone is currently doing that, but the ASSQL code is open source, and if your need is that great for msSQL I'm sure (with alot of hardwork) you could modify the code and get it to work with Microsoft's version. If it's up to you though, I would suggest mySQL since it's free and has a much broader reach hardware/operating system wise.

This is very cool news bergy!

Unfortunately, we're married to MS as it were in terms of switching to mySQL, but this looks very promising. Definitely worth investigating further!!
