BSOD stuff installing vista 64bit
Old 2008-02-09

Hey guys,

how's it going

Anyway, I'm currently having problems installing vista on my PC.

Here's my specs:
Q6600
GA DS4L
2 x 8800GT
4GB team elite RAM ( 2 x 2GB ) Dual channel
500gb SATA II
DVDR - SATA

I booted through Vista upon load, then entered language and time preference, etc.. then entered product key, copying files.. ok. extracting files...no prob..

All the way is okay EXCEPT the last stage of the installation. When the system reboots and loads vista, it goes "completing installation.." then after a couple of minutes (estimately around 15 mins ), my PC started going BSOD.

I retried installing it, still get the same prob.

I've googled a bit to get a fix on this problem. I found out that this might be because my DVDR and HDD are both SATA. Most people say that i should go enable RAID on BIOS so that Vista would tell that there is no Harddisk available, so i could load the driver before installation of vista..

sadly, i do not have a floppy drive thus i cannot use a bootable floppy disk.

Is there anyway to this problem? I keep getting that annoying BSOD thing.

Thanks in advanced,
James

You can make a custom vista installation disk with vLite and add drivers to the dvd.
What's the error id on BSOD?

I'm not sure. Apparently 0x000007e means Vista can't find a boot device, so it could be bad bios settings. Are you trying to install Vista on a RAID setup?

nope. SATA RAID is disabled in bios. If i enable it, vista couldn't find the hard drive during installation. sigh*

Ofcourse Vista needs custom raid driver to find a RAID array. Does your bios recognize the hard drive and dvdr, have you set up boot priority (DVDR before HDD)? You should also enable all POST-tests >> Quick Boot [Disabled]
Your HDD might even be broken if you can't install XP.

yes. my bios recognizes my HDD and DVDR.
yes, i have set DVDR - > HDD-> floppy priority
quick boot disabled? you mean that menu item when you hit F8?
nope. currently installed XP actually. worked good.

what im trying right now is to load the driver of my nForce 6xx during installation. so far, i get BSODs everytime i install the SATA_IDE drivers.

Hey B.Rhapsody,

Since you're doing a clean install, have you tried installing the 32bit version to see if it works? You shouldn't have to manually install any drivers during the vista installation process to get the os installed (that's one of the great features in vista). To me, it sounds like you have an incompatible or failing piece of hardware.

Yes, in most conditions shouldn't need to install different drivers during windows install. But what I don't understand is how are you loading those drivers without a floppy drive or custom install dvd?

@ServerSide,

Yo! thanks for the reply. I recently installed a non-licensed vista x86 to see if it works and it did. I now uninstalled it and tried to install the one i originally have vista ultimate x64. but sigh. it still shows those super special annoying BSODs.

you might be right though about the hardware.. would it help if I show you my specs?
CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q6600
MOBO: gigabyte N650SLI-DS4L
GPU: Palit GeForce 8800GT ( using 2 of these for SLI stuff )
MEM: 2 x 2GB
HDD: SATA-II drives
DVDR: SATA DVDRW

whacha think? is it a board problem?

@Mijiru,
from a USB flash disk sir

Hmmm, interesting. Is your system overclocked at all or do you have any bios settings that you have changed from factory settings? If it makes it through the installation and then BSOD's on reboot it could be due to a driver that vista is trying to download or has downloaded at the end of installation. Try installing with the bare minimum amount of hardware, ie only one graphics card (don't try to manually install any graphics drivers) and only the one drive needed for the OS. I wouldn't blame the board just yet, if your xp installation was fine and you could install the 32bit version of windows then chances are your board is ok.

Oh, and if it blue screens again can you record all of the stop error details from the screen and include them in your post. It may help in finding the problem

Maybe you have the 32-bit nForce drivers on your USB?

@ServerSide, the stop error is 07E. Thanks I'm not sure if im doing OC because I just got this new pc setup a day before i got ultimate. I didn't touch anything in BIOS. it's like the default factory setting.

I tried booting through vista on safe mode, i noticed it gets the 07E code everytime it loads the crcdisk.sys.

@Mijiru,

LOL, yeah i know it's pretty weird. but just as SS said, i dont need to install anything YET to get vi$ta running.

I found something on the internet. Try to install Vista with 2GB of RAM. And update you system and make sure to get this patch if you can boot. And then add the other 2GB to your system.
