BMX Bike Video: Comments please
Old 2007-07-18

Hi everyone,

Wanted your comments on this film.
Live to Ride

Shot this film as part of my Digital Video at Uni.

Project involved:

Camera Work/Filming

Post Production Editing using Adobe After Effects

Sound Editing using Adobe Audition

I had a crazy time trying to get the right guys to film. Most of them just walking in the Skate/BMX park when they felt like so getting an appointment or a fixed time was not possible.

But they were all kind to do their bit in front of the camera. ;-) So I hope in someway I have been able to capture their skills on film.

The crazy Melbourne weather only added to the woes.

And the hard bit was shortening the original music from 4 minutes to 3 minutes to match the video length.

yep! my first time at filming ;-)

so whatdayathunk?

15 year skater here, never really got into BMX but definately respect it. Took a few nasty falls growing up on bikes.

The format for all skate/bmx/ or "extreme sport" (god I hate that f'in word!) vids are all pretty much the same in style. I dont know where you guys are located, but here in NYC, we try to make our skate vids as gritty and underground as possible. No effects needed. Let the skating and environment speak for itself.

Id lose that blurred frame and any other frame effect you have on it. There was a few frames that split ino 4 and so on... Things like that take away from what your actually watching. The freeze frame/name introductions are all cool. Id recommend going out and buying a fisheye lense. Thats a key element to making a bad-ass vid. I think you can find them online for like $150-200.

I think the settings being in an enclosed area (skate park), and that it filmed from the sidelines, takes away from the experience. When the person filming is just kinda standing there its not as interesting to watch. Get on a skateboard or some blades and follow your boys around while you film their run, its much more engaging to have nice flowing and sweeping camera shots. Also stay away from tight frames, if I cant see the approach, the trick, and the landing - its all lost.

Theres a kickash free audio program called Audacity (get ur google-on!) that you can download which will help you with cutting up music.

...and Damn those dudes are doing huge 360 tailwhips into the vert!! Much respect!

Good job dude.

I'm not a pro but I think you did a good job. It would be nice to see some other locations too to keep it fresh after a while. For your first time at filming and as a medium to learning the apps etc - a decent start.

(On a sidenote - I know it must be very difficult but I like to see the music pieces kick in in time with action shots. I notice you have some slow motion with slower music parts which works I think. I'm probably more bias to music than video so I like to see the video scenes back up the music - so when the music gets going or breaks off - I like to see the video action do exactly the same thing.)

Anyway - Nice job and Good luck with it.

Yeah, I think the fish eye lens is a good idea...will and try and get one if its within budget ;-) I have burnt a deeeeep hole in my pocket buying the Sony HC7 camera so all purchases will have to wait.

And I understand what you mean about the blurred frame split into four parts...well, we were being marked on diferent effects so I tried to use them to the minimum. Just stuck to the blur and split the screen into four.

and yeah the filming from the sidelines bit, well, since the guys dont know me personally, they didnt want me follwoing them on a bike or standing with the camera bang in front of them. For some reason all the riders wanted me to be a safe distance...

but guess what, after i showed them the final film, i think they have some confidence in me....so hopefully I should have another video with them doing their bit on the streets ;-)

by the way, this was filmed at a skate/bmx park in Melbourne, Australia.
some of the guys have thier own personal videos up on Myspace. real kick@$$ stuff.

like Bx said I'd loose the blurred-frame. or at least not use it all of the time, I guess you were going for a bit of an 8mm film-type effect.
I could tell you listened to the transitions in the song and used it in your editing, good job

thanks stador and x Zero x
couldnt think of any other music than rammsteins du Hast at that time.... it had a good mix of fast and slow beats so I could use the slow motion...

working on the "extras" or "behind-the-scenes" video now...
will put them up for your comments when done....

thanks again all of you.

cheers!
