Opinions on Open Sources
Old 2008-03-17

I've been wondering how you guys feels about the Open Source programs?

Is it alright to make money out of it in terms of your projects or products which made out of (or produced from) the Open Sources? This is as far as I'm most concrned of. I've done a bit of researches online recently, that actually quite a lot of people were suggesting it's okay in doing so.

The reason why I bought up on this, is because the Web design company that I'm currently working with is using nearly all of their programs directly from the Open Sources. And no, they don't have Dreamweaver or any other proper paid Web design softwares.

Personally, I'm perferred to buy the proper softwares for my own design works, and honestly I'm not a big fan or a small fan when comes to Open Source programs. Which this situation really bugs me alot.

Also, my last question is, will this practice affect me (or anyone) negatively as a designer (or whatever) later on? Both in professional term or legal issues?

Welcome to any inputs and suggestions.

As a developer or artist, who gives a flying rat's turd what software you use? It's the resulting design/app/game etc. that matters.

Ethically, there's no conflict between using OS software to develop commercial projects.

When using OS code, frameworks etc., you just need to check the license agreement. Many are very open, others require your whole project also be OS, others still ask for money or recognition for commercial projects etc. - but that's source, not design/development tools.

I think worrying about what software you use will negatively affect others' perception of you. You should be concerned with - "Can I get the job done efficiently and to the best of my ability?"

Who cares if it's OS or cost a billion dollars?

I dunno - seems silly to me - but maybe I don't fully understand your question.

My 2-bits.

Well that's a good thing to know, I'm just wasn't sure if is totally alright in doing so as I've never really steped myself into the world of OS design programs until lately. I suppose as long as not breaching the unlegal point as far as the license agreement goes then that's fine.

Thanks for your input wraevn.

If you use open source code in your project you will probably find that you have to make any modifications/extensions that you have made to that code open source as well.

For example, if you create a web browser using code from the SuperDooper open source browser code library, you will probably have to distribute that SuperDooper code (modified or not) in a human-readable form along with your web browser. If you are using open source code in a project you should already be aware of what you can and cannot do with that code because it is explained in the license the code is released under.

Cool, thanks for the reply Nutrox. Although from my first post, it was more to do with the open sourced software (or programs, as not really scripting-based programmings), such as free Website editor or free HTML editor. But I'm assummed both OS Softwares and OS Scriptings are kind of applied the similar rules as far as I can see here.

PS: Long time no see Nutrox

There's nothing wrong with using open source software for personal or commercial purposes, software is software (I think that is what wraevn was saying). Firefox is open source, you probably use that to browse the web and/or test websites. The Flex Framework is open source, and Flex Builder is built on Eclipse which is open source. A lot of us use open source software without even realising it is open source.

If Adobe are happily using/releasing open source stuff then you can be sure there is nothing to worry about.
