AS2 - FLV playing choppy
Old 2008-02-22

I developed this site and it has a large amount of video assets.
I want to port of to AS3 asap but it need to go live so it's in AS2... so my solution has to be in AS2. Onward to my question... if anyone has any insight that would help so so so much...

I'm getting feedback that the videos (even when 100% loaded) playback very choppy.
I have a load buffer of 20% before the video will engage so slow connections have trouble. I checked all my code and there don't seem to be any wandering movieClips playing in the background that shouldn't be. I also changed compression settings on some of the videos and that didn't seem to help. However, they play perfectly on my system and other testing dev systems so it's hard to identify. Maybe I've overlooked something very rudimentary in development. But I still hear that video's play very choppy.

Please advise... here is the site... it's a beta so don't get too harsh on me yet.

Thank you so much in advance for taking time to even look at this post.

Sincerely,
Andon Guenther

Hello Andon,

Welcome to Ultrashock.

The problem seems to be the quality of the videos. I don't have a super connection here but it normally averages about 160-180 KBS when accessing a good server, and the videos on the site did keep stuttering due to the streams not being quick enough. The server where the videos are hosted could be having a big impact on connection speeds, so that is something you should probably look at.

You basically have two options at the moment though: You could either reduce the quality of the videos ( visual and/or audio ), or you could offer a high/low video quality option to the user ( that would obviously require two versions of each video ).

Thanks Nutrox... I had a hunch that would be the problem. We really tried to get all we could up there.
It's hosted at MT though... so it must just be too taxing the way they are compressed now.

Thanks so much again.

Cheers
