AS3 - AS editor with code hints and auto comp.
Old 2008-07-14

Hello USers,

I been using text mate on OSX and frankly its cool but I miss the code hints and auto completes that I would get on Flash Develop on Windows. Anyhow, I am not developing in Win anymore so I was wondering if you guys can point me to a mature AS editor with code hints and auto complete.

Thanks,
Robert

I would recommend getting Flex Builder.

Flex Builder is great and its not really expensive. Not sure if your a student or not but I think students can get it free.

Nah not a student, been around for a while. I was using Flex Develop for a while but at the new job I asked for a Mac, So now I am in a small pickle on what to use and Text mate would be nice if it wasn't for the lack of code hints and auto complete. Anyhow, I just ordered Flex Builder.

Thanks!

Good decision Artofacks. As well as the great code hinting you will also get all of the other benefits of Flex Builder such as the top-notch debugging/profiling tools and the built-in AIR related stuff. I think you will give yourself a big pat on the back once you have got to grips with Flex Builder.

Yo Nutrox,

I pressed command and clicked where the MouseEvent text was at so I can see the help docs and I got this error

Source could not be found for flash.events.MouseEvents in Applications/Adobe/Flash CS3/Configuration/ActionScript 3.0/Classes/playerglobal.swc

Do you know a fix for that error?

Thanks,
Rob

Ah, that is one of the not-so-good things. I have actually turned that functionality off because Flex Builder doesn't seem to be able to display the source code from SWC files. What you are doing there doesn't actually show any help files, it takes you straight to the AS file containing the property/method you click. It is good when it works, but as I said it doesn't like classes stored in SWC files.

As far as help files go, I always tend to have the AS3 Live Docs open in Firefox when I'm working in Flex Builder. They seem like the best place to go for reference.
