In this tutorial we are going to take you through a couple of the coolest Flash MX 2004 features: Timeline Effects and Behaviors. We’ll show you some simple examples to help you get started with these features quickly.
[link=http://www.ultrashock.com/tutorials/flashmx2004/effects-01.php]Check out the tutorial here[/link].
You’re welcome to discuss the tutorial in this thread.
So, I’m the first to get to comment this excellent tutorial. Thanks a lot, it’s great.
2 things though: The example file behaviors_media.fla was already finished. That’s cheating. ![]()
And the second one is that I and I guess many more would like to know how one can package Actionscript into a behaviour? I guess you create a Flash Javascript file with actions, but then what?

thanks for the compliments! one thing you can do to get started with writing your own behaviors is to look in the behaviors folder located in your users folder. for windows you can find it here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Local Settings\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash MX 2004\en\Configuration\Behaviors
the XML files you will find there are the behaviors. some of them are pretty simple while others can be fairly complex. perhaps a great future article here would be a simple intro into making behaviors/commands/effects? i’‘d be up for contributing

the quickest way to reverse the explode is to right click on the symbol woth the explode effect and select edit. at this point you will lose the ability to use the effect parameters dialog. in the timeline of your symebol, just select all the frames and layers and reverse the frames (modify>timeline>reverse frames). that should give you the desired effect, but again, it will now be a normal movieclip rather than one with an effect applied.

hey.. great tutorial.. very helpful..
found one problem though.. although the screen shot for the ‘stop sound’ behavior only has one field for the sound instance, in my version of 2004Pro, I have 2 fields, similar to the load sound box. The first is for linkage ID and the second is instance. Tried putting in “test.mp3” into linkage ID and then “testSound” for instance and it would not stop the MP3 from streaming when I tested the movie.
Wondering if it’s just something I’ve done, or if the fields have changed since this tutorial was written.
Thanks again..

I just replaced my MX with MX2004 on Friday. Needless to say, I’m still sitting here on Monday night.
The last time I was at this site was last year, I posted a question: ‘how do I make a button?’
I worked for a solid year and read 11 books on AS and i’m designing OOP applications now in MX.
This tutorial is an enlightening one. Big question here: Notice in your configuration/classes/mx/transitions folder a sneaky little .as file named ‘PixelDissolve.as’ I caught it for a split second on the big screen at an MX’04 seminar in New York. The speaker chose to demonstrate the BLUR effect instead. my itch began there.
I’m guessing it’s used as an #include to one of the other effects. Because it isn’t anywhere in the mx menus.
there’s a ton to be learned about ‘04 . i have my visits to this site already planned.

I have a few questions about this one. First, i, like Yilkee who posted above do not have test_movie.swf included in the source files. Also, when learning about behaviors i have stumbled onto something interesting. It seems that i can not assign a fast forward and rewind behaviors to gel Fast Forward and gel Rewind as you explained it possible. When i drag them to stage they get a property of button, not a movie clip nor graphic, and the embedded video behaviors “Fast Forward” and “Rewind” only apply to movie clips, not buttons.
I did make it work by changing the gel Fast Forward into a movie clip and adding the appropriate behavior to it, but if you test the movie it will come out flashing due to looping of it’s normal and “clicked” states.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
